Michael Foley was born June 7, 1965, in Bloomington, Indiana. When Mick was a young boy, his family moved to Setauket on Long Island. In High School, while training for the upcoming Lacrosse season, Mick became enchanted with wrestling. He hitch hiked to Madison Square Garden to see Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka leap from the top of the cage, onto the prone Don Muraco. This event, along with the humiliation of being called “Frank” by a girl he liked, inspired Mick to create two home movies with his friends.

The first video, entitled The Legend of Frank Foley, was a comedy, in which Mick was called “Frank” by his date, and then attempts suicide. He is then nursed back to health, with the help of his friends.

The second video, The Loved One, was about a WWF wrestler named “Dude Love”. Dude Love was a chick magnet, destined to win the WWF Championship belt. In the climactic battle sequence, Mick takes a dive off his best friend's roof, landing on a cushion of mattresses and boxes. The video made its way into the hands of professional wrestler Dominic Denucci, who invited Foley to join his training school. After countless hours of long, hard work, Mick Foley made his professional wrestling debut in 1986.

In the decade that followed, Mick made a name for himself as cult icon Cactus Jack. Known for his willingness to take “big bumps”, bleed, and sacrifice for the sport, Cactus Jack was accepted by fans and bookers in almost every promotion he joined. Cactus Jack wrestled in many Independent territories including: Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee. He also frequented other countries, including Africa, and Japan. Cactus Jack became nationally recognized, with his first stint in World Championship Wrestling, in 1989. After WCW's buyout by Ted Turner, and under new management, Mick rejoined WCW and feuded with main event talent Sting.

After leaving WCW for the second time, Mick joined Extreme Championship Wrestling, a group that would become known as one of the Big Three (ECW, WCW, & WWF). By this time, Cactus Jack was idolized in Japan as King of the Death Match. Mick was finally given an offer to join the World Wrestling Federation in 1996. Under the name Mankind, Mick was able to entertain fans in some of the biggest matches of his career. For a brief period, Mick was even allowed to wrestle under the gimmicks of Dude Love and Cactus Jack.

After fifteen years in the sport, Mick Foley achieved his goal of winning the WWF Championship in 1998. Since then, he won the title on two other occasions and will go down in the record books as the first Hardcore Champion in Federation history.

It was Mick's unorthodox, violent style that caught spectator's attention, but it was his personality that won over the hearts of millions. His first book Have A Nice Day reached the top of the New York Times non-fiction best-seller list in 1999. He followed with a sequel Foley Is Good, and two children's books: Halloween Hijinks and Christmas Chaos.

Mick retired from active wrestling in the spring of 2000, in order to preserve his health, spend quality time with family, and more actively pursue his writing career.
